Mike is King!
Plymouth, WI - Mike Mullen was crowned King of the WABAM Dirt Kings Late Model Tour Ted Dolhun Sr. Classic at Plymouth Dirt Track Racing in BMRE Electrick Carts Co. Victory Lane.
Nick Anvelink and Taylor Scheffler led the field to the green flag, with Anvelink taking the lead right from the start. Caution slowed the field on lap two as Scheffler got loose out of turn four turning into the inside of the track and hitting Mitch McGrath in front of the field which blocked the track just before the start finish line and collected cars at the very front of the field including Brad Mueller, Justin Schmidt and Troy Springborn, who all received substantial damage and did not continue.
Scheffler continued as did McGrath, who was trying to collect the Pro Power Racing Engines Clean Sweep Award and an additional $2100, as he was already the Champ Pans Fast Qualifier, setting a new Plymouth Dirt Track Record with a 12.828 second lap and won the Autoworx Heat 1.
On the restart, Anvelink took the lead with Brett Swedberg racing to the inside of McGrath for second, followed by Turk Letizia. Swedberg completed the pass on McGrath and set his sights on Anvelink, racing to the inside of Anvelink and leading lap three. Anvelink prevailed again on lap four and pulled away to a 2.487 second lead.
Just before halfway, Anvelink was approaching the tail lend of the field, but caution slowed the race on lap 18, allowing McGrath, Swedberg, and Mullen to close the gap to the leader.
Anvelink continued to lead, stretching the lead to just .678 seconds over Mullen, until Mullen closed the gap with just five laps to go.
Mullen made the pass for the lead on lap 38, as Anvelink tried to make his way around Joe Bongiorno. Bongiorio was the last car on the lead lap and Mullen closed the gap to Anvelink. Mullen dove to the inside of Anvelink coming out of turn four on lap 38 racing to the flagstand. Mullen and Anvelink raced side by side behind Bongiorno, with Mullen pulling ahead as they raced to the white flag. Anvelink tried to make the pass stick on the inside of Mullen, but Mullen was able to hold on, finishing .246 seconds ahead of Anvelink.
For Mullen, it was his 2nd WABAM Dirt Kings Late Model Tour victory of the season taking home $3500 and lap leader bonuses, thanks to the Dolhun Family for sponsoring and collecing lap leader money for all 40 laps of the Ted Dolhun Sr. Classic.
Anvelink finished second, followed by Swedberg, Joel Bennett and Scheffler.
